...Years ago, in the mists of the early computer era, a great entertainment came upon the land. Written by the scribes Crowther and Woods in the archaic tongue of FORTRAN, this mainframe fantasy of the Colossal Cave enticed adventurers from all over the world.
Years later, in the paleolithic times of the Apple II, a retelling of the story came from the monastery in Redmond (actually, Bellevue back then) under the new name of Adventure. This version became popular with the folk of the time and caused a great many coins to change hands.
With only paper and pen for mapping their explorations and only curt words to guide their travels, many brave souls attempted -- often in the dark -- to match wits against the dwarves, the underground world, and a tiny universe of time and space that often seemed to curve in on itself.
